![]() I was afraid of missing out on that stepping stone to maturity. I remember being around 18 and wanting to experience drugs. I like my music to somehow feel like a cathartic release of that tension in my body and mind. Everything moves fast for me, I’m anxious and often on edge. I think this song and band might work better for people who like to get into that druggy head space. I’m not a marijuana guy or into drug culture in general. ![]() Moody song, a little too moody and slow to the point it’s tiring, kind of exhausting even, to listen to. Kurt Cobain is probably my favourite guitar player – it was all about energy, catchyness and fun bordering on stupidity but somehow ending up on the other side and seeming artistic due to his earnest approach. I love the sound of guitars, but I don’t need technical solos. The build up is slower which leads to a more satisfying climax. Part 2 is far more interesting than part 1. I can respect Tool for doing that, but it’s not the kind of thing I enjoy listening to.Īs the name suggests it sounds kind of similar to the previous track – there’s that same sense of foreboding Tool conjure up effectively, alongside jazzy drumming and the distinctive vocals of singer Maynard James Keenan I know a lot of people would argue Tool have their own category but I group together ‘art rock’ as music that is made with a desire to push the boundaries of what music can be an. But to compare this to bands in the same category such as Pink Floyd, Radiohead or Can would seem wrong to most people. The pay off is almost crescendo like at the end of the track. Tool provide something a little different to that here, so I have to try my best to appreciate the music for what it is. Music plays a different role in everyone’s life, and I have a major bias towards immediacy – catchy hooks, intense yells – primal emotions. It gives me bad vibes, and suggests we’re entering the realm of ‘art’ music. I often get a little nervous when there are parts 1 and 2 of a song an album. Intense ending as Maynard James Keenan voice increases in intensity from his usual whispery soft tone to a full on growl. What remains is the chugging guitar line, creating a tension and hurtling the song forwards into the unknown. There’s a slow build to this and elements such as guitar solos and textural squawks come and go. Beginning with a bubbling bass line before unleashing some thrashy guitars alongside a catchy refrain. ![]() This track has more of a tension/release structure. In some ways this track was as experimental as a Mr. I respect the artistry of the track, but I’d prefer a little more immediacy, especially in the vocal melodies. I don’t know who exactly to compare them too, to me they’re a bridging band that moved rock away from the simplicity of grunge to a jazzy kind of metal that even more mainstream bands like Slipknot and Korn also produced. It’s dark and sludgy and intense and visceral. This track is driven by a funky bass groove and a lot of textural guitar work. I do know they have one of the most rabid fanbases, almost cult like in their devotion to the band.Ī lot of people would be uncomfortable to view them as a ‘nu-metal’ band and would prefer to see them as art rock or something like this.
